So what makes Turkey\u2019s manufacturing industry so attractive to European companies?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><b>The Turkish Economy\u2019s Heavy Hitters<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we discuss the reasons behind Turkey\u2019s manufacturing development and its popularity as a sourcing destination, let\u2019s examine some of the key industries that play a major part in the nation\u2019s economy: \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Apparel<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"c7\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.textileexcellence.com\/news\/details\/1869\/turkey-has-its-advantages-as-a-sourcing-hub-for-europe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Figures from the Turkish Ministry of Economy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that the country\u2019s economy is heavily dependent on the fashion industry. In 2015, textiles and apparel accounted for the greatest share (18.5%) of total goods exported from Turkey. In 2010, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com.tr\/tr\/publications\/arastirmalar\/pdf\/turkey-in-2041-eng.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it was valued at US$6.7 billion.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Automobiles<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turkey is also a key regional hub for the assembly of automobiles, with popular European carmakers such as Renault and Ford enjoying Turkey\u2019s customs union with the EU, which grants the ability to export non-essential goods to Europe without customs restrictions. In September 2017, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/turkey\/car-production\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turkish automotive production had grown by 13% year-on-year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with a total of 1.22 million vehicles produced in the first nine months of 2017. <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"imageframe-align-center\"><span class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-3 hover-type-none\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wsafety-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"748\" height=\"403\"class=\"img-responsive wp-image-13859\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wsafety-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image1-200x108.jpg 200w, https:\/\/wsafety-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image1-400x216.jpg 400w, https:\/\/wsafety-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image1-600x323.jpg 600w, https:\/\/wsafety-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image1.jpg 748w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><\/span><\/div><ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Toys<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The toy industry is another major player in Turkey\u2019s economy, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kidsturkey.com\/en\/toy-industry-in-turkey\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the Turkish Institute of Statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it has grown 20 times in the last five years, with a market share of approx US$1 billion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><b>A Prime Sourcing Destination<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes Turkey such a prime sourcing destination for European businesses? The answer to that question covers many factors, but arguably, chief amongst them is faster delivery times when compared to counterparts in the Far East. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asia typically cannot compete with Turkey\u2019s proximity to Europe, which allows buyers to quickly make repeat orders on popular items within a given season (crucial for the fashion industry) &#8211; orders can be placed and samples received five to seven days later. Compared to this, it takes at least 41 days for samples from China to reach France by boat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speed to market is essential to Turkey\u2019s competitiveness, especially as it competes with the Far East. &#8220;While Turkey has a higher level of production costs compared to typical Far East sourcing destinations, it does offer a favorable exchange rate,&#8221; <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.textileexcellence.com\/news\/details\/1869\/turkey-has-its-advantages-as-a-sourcing-hub-for-europe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Stephen Taylor, senior manager at Kurt Salmon.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;Overall, the higher production cost in Turkey compared with the Far East can be leveled out by the benefits of shorter timelines and faster reactivity to market developments.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turkey\u2019s strategic location at the crossroads of Europe and Central Asia also offers a geographical advantage for teams wanting to fly in and do business on the same day. Producing goods in Turkey allows for regular factory or site visits at relatively little expense, which means retailers and buyers can be more hands-on with suppliers, and QC teams can make regular checks on production runs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, Turkey also happens to be a prime sourcing destination because it is a raw material powerhouse, supplying North Africa, Central Europe, and East Africa. Export of raw materials in Turkey is at a constant incline. In 2017, raw material <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutritionbusinessjournal.com\/2018-raw-materials-report\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sales grew 6%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and reached US$5.1 billion. By the first quarter of 2018, that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.just-style.com\/news\/turkey-textile-and-raw-material-exports-grow-8-in-h1_id134321.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">number rose to US$5.3 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turkish fabrics, textiles, trims, and supplies are currently in competition with China and India for the Central European markets. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wits.worldbank.org\/CountryProfile\/en\/Country\/EUN\/Year\/2013\/TradeFlow\/Import\/Partner\/All\/Product\/50-63_TextCloth\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Integrated Trade Solution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in 2013, the top partner countries from which the European Union imported textiles and clothing included China, Turkey, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan. China accounted for 37.64% of the trade value share, whereas Turkey accounted for 14.09% and India accounted for 7.09%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turkey takes advantage of the CMT (Cut, Make, Trim) production model to supply fabrics, trims, and accessories to factories in Morocco, Tunisia, and Central and Eastern Europe. As such, brands can book Turkish fabric for their CMT maker. For example, a brand can buy Turkish fabric and have it shipped to Bulgaria in order to make a lady\u2019s shirt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><b>Vertical Supply Chains Backed by a Premium Workforce<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well-developed integrated vertical supply chains &#8211; wherein organizations control a greater degree of the entire supply chain &#8211; are another reason for Turkey\u2019s popularity with buyers, and the ultra-important apparel industry serves as a prime example. Turkish manufacturers are capable of creating a wide range of textiles and garment finishes, and because everything can be produced in one country, this eases logistics and sourcing concerns for retailers, as well as speeds up delivery times. \u2013 \u201cYou don\u2019t need to import from other countries,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/business-operations\/supply-chain\/buying-and-sourcing-in-turkey\/7018069.article\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Istanbul Apparel Exporters\u2019 Association member Cem Altan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"imageframe-align-center\"><span class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-4 hover-type-none\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wsafety-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image5-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"481\"class=\"img-responsive wp-image-13884\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wsafety-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image5-1-200x120.jpg 200w, https:\/\/wsafety-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image5-1-400x241.jpg 400w, https:\/\/wsafety-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image5-1-600x361.jpg 600w, https:\/\/wsafety-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image5-1.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><\/span><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep sep-none\" style=\"border-color:#e0dede;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:10px;margin-bottom:10px;\"><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A key component of the country\u2019s vertical supply chain capabilities is Turkey\u2019s high-caliber workforce. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.invest.gov.tr\/en-US\/investmentguide\/investorsguide\/Pages\/DemographyAndLaborForces.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Turkey\u2019s labor force is approximately 30.5 million people, making it the 3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> largest labor market in Europe, following close behind Germany and the UK. Growth in university education has enabled Turkey to transform its young population into a skilled workforce:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 6.7 million students in Turkey are enrolled in tertiary education. This is an impressive figure considering China &#8211; with a population over 15 times higher than Turkey &#8211; has a population of 30 million students enrolled in tertiary education. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately 800,000 students graduate from universities each year \u2013 almost double the figure from 2010.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World-class engineering education.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This last point is of particular note, with the IMD World Competitiveness Executive Opinion Survey scoring Turkey 6.86 out of 10 for \u2018Qualified Engineers\u2019 \u2013 beating traditional engineering powerhouse, Germany, with a score of 6.58.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"imageframe-align-center\"><span class=\"fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-5 hover-type-none\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wsafety-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"504\"class=\"img-responsive wp-image-13865\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wsafety-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image2-200x174.jpg 200w, https:\/\/wsafety-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image2-400x348.jpg 400w, https:\/\/wsafety-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image2.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><\/span><\/div><h1><b>Looking to the Future<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Turkey to continue developing its manufacturing industries, and provide employment for the increasing number of university graduates, it\u2019s important that businesses look beyond the mechanical production of goods, and focus on progressing in other, vertically integrated areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One such drive is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/business-operations\/supply-chain\/turkeys-design-capabilities\/7018264.article\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">augmentation of the country\u2019s design capabilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Over the last 15 years, Turkey has introduced more and more in-house design departments in its factories. This move offers brands and buyers added value; providing further design options, and potentially saving retailers both time and money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><b>Environmental Issues<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When discussing a country\u2019s future production plans, it\u2019s impossible not to address their particular stance on environmental issues. Kurt Salmon\u2019s Stephen Taylor believes Turkey is operating responsibly in this area and enforcing strict controls over what it produces:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is one of the few countries to mandate all textile manufacturers to comply with internationally accepted environmental standards.\u201d For example, Turkey is one of only five countries &#8211; the others being Germany, Holland, India, and France &#8211; to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/5fc9\/8c05ccaf39a505173f6c6cf1e5255ccaea4b.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enforce a ban on carcinogenic azo dyes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under eco-norms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turkey\u2019s billion-dollar toy industry has also been quick to adopt internationally recognized safety and environmental specifications. Since 2005, all of the nation\u2019s toy manufacturers must adhere to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/growth\/single-market\/ce-marking_en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CE marking standards of the European Union<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The progress in this important field stems from the Government\u2019s changes to the Law of Environment, which has been modified over the last ten years to bring it in line with the European Union. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><b>Corporate Social Responsibility<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As more brands acknowledge the increasing importance of their record on corporate social responsibility (CSR), this emphasis is being passed down the chain to suppliers. As a result, more and more Turkish manufacturers are establishing CSR departments in their companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hikmet Tanriverdi is the president of the Istanbul Apparel Exporters\u2019 Association, and he believes that the progress Turkey is making with CSR issues will continue, \u201cWith co-operation between the sector, NGOs [non-governmental organizations] and other business partners, we believe that Turkish producers will be in the leading position on CSR.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><b>Ground Realities<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As previously mentioned, individual <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organizations and several measures have been taken by the government to push<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for environmental sustainability and corporate social responsibility. However, the ground realities of integration of these practices still leave a lot to be desired.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Istanbul Textile and Apparel Exporters Association (ITKIB), most of the garment industry is ISO 9001 or ISO 9002 certified, signifying that most organizations meet satisfactory environmental and social responsibility standards. However, Turkey has a dense and diverse network of manufacturers, making it reactive and productive, but which also makes them difficult to adequately audit from a CSR and sustainability point of view.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result of that lack of efficient or adequate auditing, a number of environmentally harmful processes are still used by a number of companies, all the way from the cultivation of natural fibers (which entails the use of pesticides and harmful chemicals) to the production of synthetic fibers (which leads to harmful emissions).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/AgusWitono\/analysis-ofenvironmentalsituationinturkishtextileindustry\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2012 Study conducted by the Technology Development Foundation of Turkey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the biggest environmental issue that continues to plague the Turkish textile industry is water pollution caused by the discharge of effluents. Currently, the textile industry &#8211; responsible for 15% of the water consumption &#8211; is the second most water-intensive sector (the first being Basic Metals). The Ergene Basin, for example, is currently in the grips of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/285379857_Pollutants_of_textile_industry_wastewater_and_assessment_of_its_discharge_limits_by_water_quality_standards\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pollution as a result of textile industry wastewater<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and discharge. Liquid wastes that originate from washing operations, dyeing, and neutralization processes damage the water quality downstream and threaten the aquatic life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, even though many companies in the garment industry submit themselves to social audits, most others continue to do little for CSR. Companies that lag behind are usually driven by a short-term management perspective.
